VOX — Voice-based AI interaction
VOX is a wearable interface for dictation and voice-based AI interaction. Worn against the skin (under a T-shirt), it captures speech through the body, allowing people to speak quietly without listening to those around them. It leaves the face and hands free, stays largely out of sight, and is designed to be worn throughout the day.
We designed VOX around two uses: fast text input and frequent interaction with AI. It can dictate messages, notes, and documents, but its form factor also anticipates a future where speaking to AI becomes part of everyday computing. Inspired in part by the stethoscope, VOX listens primarily to the wearer. You put it on, forget it is there, and speak when you need it.
VOX extends the interaction model we started with MouthPad. MouthPad provides cursor control through tongue and head movement. VOX adds text and voice input. Both began with assistive use in mind and follow the same principle: adding capability without turning the interface into a visible statement. MouthPad disappears inside the mouth. VOX disappears under clothing. A constraint that matters in assistive technology becomes a useful principle for universal design.
I defined VOX with Augmental’s CEO as the company’s second product and took it from initial concept through public launch. I worked across the full product: its interaction model, industrial design, physical controls, and the software experience that connects it to the devices and applications people already use.
